Who are the start-ups you could Mentor?
We have selected a range of impactful social and environmental startups to take part in the Impact Mentoring programme. Each of the startups are working to tackle some of society’s biggest challenges from youth development, education, unemployment and poverty to isolation, the refugee crisis, animal cruelty and conservationism, and have specific support areas that you will be able to input on.
You can learn a bit more about each of the startups that will be taking part and the areas where they need support below:
The Date Company provides organic, ethically sourced, premium dates coming straight from the Middle East. We pride ourselves on ethics by making sure our farmers are paid fairly and by donating 5% of our profits to charity. As a Social Impact startup, we need to come up with a sustainable sales strategy in which we are constantly bringing in sales weekly rather than seasonally. We also have no marketing plan, and I believe part of this ties down to how early we are in our business. It would be great to have a mentor who can help us further develop and structure our business strategy…Hamayun Farooq
Becoming a Mentor
As a Mentor, you will be assigned a socially or environmentally impactful startup who you will lend support to across monthly face to face sessions providing advice and guidance in the field relevant to your area of business expertise. The aim is, over a regular series of meetings, to help them address key business areas that develop and strengthen their strategic vision.
The programme lasts 9 months and you’d be expected to commit to the full duration of the programme, offering a mix of monthly face to face sessions alongside supportive phone calls and emails in between.
To be a specialist mentor you must:
- Have excellent listening skills
- Demonstrate empathy and understanding
- Be a lateral thinker: able to review the full 360 degrees of a project
- Be confidant making strategic recommendations
- Have expert knowledge in a specialist business subject
- Be able to give 2-4 hours of your time a month face to face and by phone/email
Want to apply?
You must be able to commit on average 3 hours of your time per month between October 2018 and June 2019, as well as be able to demonstrate how you would use your professional skills and experience to mentor a start-up.
