_SocialStarters is excited to announce the launch of a new 6 week pilot programme for skilled professionals to work alongside social entrepreneurs in Manila, in the Philippines.

The decision for _SocialStarters to expand to the Philippines comes at a crucial time for the country, which has a strong entrepreneurial culture with one million medium and small enterprises that account for 99% of all businesses in the country.

One embodiment of the boom of social entrepreneurs in Philippines is Antonio Meloto, founder of Gawad Kalinga, now a multi-million dollar Filipino NGO and whose accolades include Social Entrepreneur of the World from the World Entrepreneurship Forum. Gawad Kalinga aims to end poverty through a vast network connecting local communities to programs and businesses in education, health, environment and productivity. The goal of Gawad Kalinga is to end poverty for 5 million families by 2024 through utilizing initiatives that support early stage social businesses. More information about Gawad Kalinga’s work can be found here.

_SocialStarters‘ new program will complement their already existing programs in India, Brazil and Sri Lanka which have yielded positive results in its first year. Since its inception, _SocialStarters has worked with 73 volunteer consultants, and 32 social entrepreneurs to deliver over 3,150 hours of pro bono consulting and $157,000 worth of in-kind services.

Volunteers with the programme taking place from 25th June to 6th August will work with local people to tackle core social issues that can range from waste management to women’s empowerment to health to everything in between. Social impact consultants will receive training and workshops in social entrepreneurship, start-up methods, consultancy tools and techniques as well as get career and personal development coaching to help gain perspective and discover a fulfilling career.
